The Volvo 850 Turbo: An Overview
The Volvo 850 sedan was produced for North American markets between 1991 and 1996. A wagon version appeared midway through the model's life cycle, and it would be the first time that Volvo Cars implemented FWD (and a sideways transmission configuration at that). The following models were sold during those years:
- The Volvo 850 GLT
- The Volvo 850 T5R
- The Volvo 850 R
- The Volvo 850 AWD
This model was another groundbreaking effort by Volvo Cars. This vehicle introduced the SIPS (side-impact-protection-system), a self-adjusting seat belt system, FWD, and a specialized suspension system patented by the United States. Volvo Cars also began to penetrate the luxury market with this vehicle. It employed a leather interior, Alcantara door panels, a power sunroof, temperature-controlled seats, auto climate, and keyless entry. AWD was available, but that feature was reserved exclusively for the wagon. A special collectors' note was the Volvo 850 saloon's entry into the British Touring Car Championship. Having partnered with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), any TWR Volvo 850 will share signature design elements with the TWR Range Rovers from that same era.
