Range & MPG
Although the Volvo XC90 PHEV is not entirely electric, it can travel for a short time using electric-only power, producing a solid amount of range when needed. As the Hyundai IONIQ 9 is fully electric, it will naturally have more all-electric range across the lineup. Here's how the two stack up:
- Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid range: 32 miles3
- Hyundai IONIQ 9 range with AWD (minimum/maximum): 311/320 miles4
- Hyundai IONIQ 9 range with RWD: 335 miles4
However, the combination of the Volvo model's engine and hybrid motor system gives it the advantage in overall range. While we are still waiting for EPA estimates on the 2026 model year, the Volvo T8 powertrain – which carries over from the 2025 model year – was capable of going 530 miles6 on a full tank and with a full battery charge. This means that you won't have to stop nearly as often as you would with the Hyundai vehicle.
The rivalry is strong in this area, and we can say with certainty that both SUVs have their merits. The Hyundai IONIQ 9 scores a maximum EPA-estimated 92 MPGe (Combined),5 while the Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid MPG rating is an EPA-estimated 27 (Combined)3 when looking solely at the gas engine and an EPA-estimated 58 MPGe (Combined)3 when using gas and electricity. At the same time, a Volvo XC90 PHEV could be a more convenient option for many families, including those with limited charging access. Keep in mind, too, that, unlike an EV, a plug-in hybrid provides long-range flexibility and confidence on the road since the gas engine can be used for extended trips.
